Letter to the Editor-Deconstruction

Meg has a talent at getting her letters to the editor published. This is the third I know of in two different cities, her second one with the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

Deconstruction
"Tornado confirmed; 2,700 buildings in St. Louis County with serious damage (April 23)" highlighted that the Good Friday tornados resulted in hundreds of condemned residences. Volunteers will help to clear debris and rebuild the homes that remain structurally sound, but what will happen to the condemned homes?

One solution is deconstruction. This is the process of taking the remains of a building apart piece by piece and recycling the materials instead of demolishing a building and dumping the materials into a landfill. Deconstruction diverts 80 percent of waste from landfills. While other cities, such as Cleveland and Detroit, support deconstruction and the creation of green-collar jobs, St. Louis has lagged behind — until recently.

An emerging nonprofit organization, the Brick Bank, is offering deconstruction services in St. Louis and could become a pivotal player in promoting sustainable industry jobs in St. Louis. Deconstruction provides an opportunity to turn the wreckage of the Good Friday tornadoes into salvageable materials, materials for rebuilding the St. Louis community."
